The Lyndon Chair

Lyndon is a street running through the historic Rosedale Park neighborhood on Detroit's west side. It traverses the spectrum of Black life, interrogating its polarities. The concept for the Lyndon chair is inspired by the designer’s journey through these spaces as an adolescent in the early 2000s. The chair reflects the interplay between the muted domesticity of youth and a longing to experience a certain wildness beyond the porch. Its curves mimic the city’s soundscape and landscape, echoing the high-spirited rhythms of an environment nestled in the Great Lakes. The Lyndon’s sturdy craftsmanship may inspire sitters to rest in the sunlight of an open field, but the piece fulfills its purpose in the home. Made from Cherry Oak with a satin finish, each chair designed by Aleiya Olu is handmade in Detroit.

Lyndon Table

A nocturnal sibling to the Lyndon Chair II, the Lyndon Table features a soft velvet base and ebonized Cherry wood with floral cutouts, a nod to the Arts & Crafts movement. The wood cutouts illustrate the French game effeuiller la marguerite and are an ode to lessons in selfhood that spring from youthful games. The childlike characteristic of the ox-eyed daisies takes a tonal shift through the treatment of the wood in black tea, vinegar, and steel wool. This darkening suggests feelings of longing and desperation for a bygone era, as well as the shadows of people and places that have helped shape the designer's identity. The squiggly underbelly of the table is a motif carried from the Lyndon Chair, giving palpability to the music and energy of the designer's hometown in the early 2000s. The piece was handmade in Detroit, MI, and designed by Aleiya Olu.

  • While the chair has the proportions of a throne – it’s kind of regal and weighty (not to mention ergonomically correct) – it’s also squiggly and fun, hand-assembled in cherry oak with a satin finish that practically makes it glow.

  • When conceiving the design, Olu found inspiration everywhere from the Motor City’s rich craft tradition and midcentury modern aesthetic to its buzzy creative scene. The resulting hand-assembled cherry oak chair is simple in materiality but playful in shape; sturdy in stance but warm in embrace.

Aleiya Olu is the founder of From Us to You, a Detroit-based design consultancy, and an emerging designer who has long kept a finger on the city’s creative pulse.

Olu developed a keen interest in design while living in a 1920s furniture showroom that had been converted into lofts in Eastern Market. Moved by Detroit’s cultural blueprint, Olu began to study industrial design and ergonomics. The resulting work, the Lyndon Chair, named after a street on Detroit’s west side, intuitively mirrors the familiarity of intimate spaces and their functionality.

In addition to From Us to You, Olu is a partner at Olu & Company, a strategic marketing firm working with clients at the intersection of art, design, and social justice. She is also the co-founder of Detroit Art Week, playing a pivotal role in advancing the careers of many emerging, mid-career, and established artists.
